The buying guide

Microclover seed,
without the guesswork.

Start with your lawn, then choose seed that fits it. Here is what matters on the label and what to check before you buy.

Microclover is a small-leaf selection of white clover (Trifolium repens). You can buy it alone or in a turfgrass blend. Those are different planting decisions, so check the actual seed mix rather than relying on the front of the bag.

Buying shortcut: For an existing grass lawn, compare pure microclover seed and blends based on whether you want to add clover or reseed the grass too. Follow the seeding rate on the specific package.

Choose the type of seed

Add clover

Pure microclover seed

Useful when the grass is staying and you want to introduce clover. Check the named variety, purity, germination, and coverage on the current listing.

Reseed together

Microclover + grass mix

Useful when you are establishing or repairing both parts of the lawn. Read the ingredient percentages and choose turfgrass suited to your region.

Read the label, not just the listing title

  • Species and variety: Confirm white clover (Trifolium repens) and any named microclover cultivar, rather than assuming all small clover is the same.
  • Seed composition: A blend may contain mostly grass. Compare the percentage by weight and the grass species.
  • Pure live seed details: Look for germination, purity, and test date where listed. Seed quality affects how much viable seed you actually spread.
  • Coverage and seeding rate: Use the package's directions for your planting method, then run the numbers with our seed calculator.
  • Your growing conditions: Match the grass component, if any, to your climate, sun, soil, and maintenance plan.

What to be cautious about

“Microclover,” “mini clover,” and “white clover” are used inconsistently in marketplace titles. If a listing does not tell you what is in the bag, ask the seller for the seed label. A low price per bag says little without the weight and coverage. The examples above are a research shortlist, not a ranked recommendation. Do not assume a listing title or an older manufacturer sheet matches the seed lot delivered to you.

After you choose

Check the recommended planting season for your local climate. Good seed-to-soil contact is important for small clover seed; Penn State advises that white clover should not be planted deeper than ¼ inch. Watering and establishment instructions should follow the product label and local extension advice. Then read our planting sequence.
