There is no single planting date for every US lawn. White clover seed germinates during cool, moist periods in spring and fall, according to Penn State Extension. If your bag also contains grass, that grass's regional planting window matters too.
Spring or fall?
In many cool-season lawn regions, late summer to early fall gives new turfgrass favorable soil warmth and cooler air. University of Maryland Extension lists mid-August to mid-October for cool-season turfgrass in Maryland and notes that spring seeding is more challenging there. That is a Maryland example, not a national calendar.
Spring can also work for clover where moisture and temperatures cooperate. The challenge is getting seedlings established before summer heat and competition. A fall planting needs enough time to root before a hard freeze. Check your county extension's lawn calendar for the local window.
Match the whole seed mix
A pure microclover bag and a blend with tall fescue, fine fescue, or perennial ryegrass do not pose the same timing question. Read the grass species and the package directions. For cool-season grass mixes, seed in the locally recommended cool-season establishment period. For a different grass type or climate, get regional advice rather than borrowing another state's dates.
Watch conditions, not just the calendar
- Moisture: The soil surface must stay adequately moist while seed germinates. A dry week after sowing can undo a good planting date.
- Heat: Avoid making tender seedlings face peak summer stress immediately after emergence.
- Frost: Leave enough establishment time before freezing weather in cool climates.
- Soil contact: A well-prepared surface matters in every season. Penn State advises planting white clover no deeper than ¼ inch.
Planning rule: Start with your county extension's lawn-seeding window, then check the exact bag's grass species and instructions. Move to the next suitable window if you cannot keep the seedbed moist.
Your next step
Once you have a likely planting window, measure the lawn, use the package rate in our seed calculator, and follow the full planting guide for preparation, sowing, and early care.
